We take our responsibilities to our planet and customers very seriously.

As a food producer we play a vital role in supporting our farmers, developing nutritious, affordable products for our customers all while working to lower our impact on our environment.

We believe that by focusing on three key areas we can generate real change for the better.

Rooted in Soil is our programme for rewarding farmers for looking after their Soil health.

Our Ambition:

Flour that starts with better farming practices but still delivers everything our customers expect, the right amount of flour, on time, at the correct specification.

Rooted in Soil is our new programme to improve the land our wheat is grown on, by investing directly in our farmers who have the health of their soil at heart. Any farm. Any field. Every step forward is rewarded.

We want our farmers to be able to choose the right practices for their farm. Not all land is the same and different methods will suit different farms. Our scheme will allow farmers to adopt new practices over time, reducing their financial risk, whilst building a more resilient supply chain.

Their Reward:

Working together in partnership with farmers ensures they can take the risk to invest in their soil.

We offer an increased payment to farmers for various behaviours in the following categories:

  1. Tillage
  2. Crop Nutrition
  3. Soil health
Our Environment:

Incentivising farmers to change their behaviour towards more sustainable practices will help:

  • Minimise Soil disturbance: Allowing the earth to be home to flora and fauna that supports soil health
  • Maintain living roots: helping to feed the microbial life within the soil
  • Bring balance between nature and farming: through understanding the different farm context
  • Keep soil covered: helping to protect soil structure and enhance soil health
  • Maximise crop diversity: increasing diverse plant life attracts insects and strengthens a balance bio-diverse ecosystem

Rooted in Soil will support farmers to make responsible decisions for the long-term health of their land – helping the soil become more resilient to climate stress and ensuring all our future food security.

By purchasing flour through our Rooted in Soil scheme, you are supporting investment into UK soils for future generations and a more resilient supply chain.

Our mass balance scheme means the flour you purchase may not physically contain wheat grown by participating farmers. Instead, your purchase contributes to a system that rewards certain farmers for improving soil health and sustainability for the future.

We believe in quality without compromise. By using a mass balance approach we will ensure you always receive flour that is in spec and on time. With every purchase of Rooted in Soil wheat helping to drive positive change in long term soil health and future soil health.

How Mass Balance works:

We are committed to lowering our impact on the planet around us. We have started this journey by:

  • Investing in green technology as well as operating an eco-friendly delivery fleet using the latest Euro 6 engines.
  • We manage our estate of strategically located flour mills to reduce food miles of inbound raw materials and product delivery to our customers.
  • We’re also committed to meeting every environmental goal set out for us by the UK Government.
